Edit: So, turns out those are basically what I thought: OD&D and clones thereof. In all honesty, I'd probably have to do even more work trying to back-port the AD&D 2e mobs to OD&D clones. I'd first have to find the rules, then learn them, and by that point I'd probably have been better off just running it in 2e. At least that way I could just straight-up use most of the creature stats from the video game.

That said, if someone else were to run something similar aimed at helping newbies learn, I'd probably go for it if only to say I did.
Yep, OSR is the Old School Revival (or Renaissance) and OSR games are generally clones of older versions of D&D, usually 1E or B/X, but there are others. For Gold and Glory is a 2E clone, I believe, but its one that I haven't read.

But hey, there's no reason you can't deliver a good IWD experience with 5E. Killing scads of monsters is fun in any edition. In fact, it might work out better than 2E in some ways. IWD kind of assumes the player will keep rolling until he's got a group of far-better-than-average PCs. 5E might be better for that sort of power level.

Other groups I've run this for have enjoyed it thus far in both 3.5e and Pathfinder, so I must be doing something right.
